Arepas are made of white cornmeal, water, and salt, the dough is formed into a patty, grilled, baked and filled with a variety of ingredients (preparation instruction would normally be explained in the package). The fillings are what bring personality to it. There are some traditional such as #pabellón (shredded beef, plantains, and black beans), plain fresh white cheese (or queso fresco) and the reina pepiada, which means "curvaceous queen." The nickname was inspired by a well-known beauty queen.
As a Venezuelan girl, growing up in a country where -out of the womb- you were expected to wave and smile (like a beauty queen), eating an #arepa with lettuce, chicken and mayonnaise seemed contradictory. Nowadays, thanks goodness! Things are changing, so I’ve decided to share the way I eat arepas. It is based on strong nutrition.
It takes an egg, hummus, avocado, and a brainwash.
